New CME Training Series to Operationalize Health Equity

Inequitable healthcare is simply not safe care.

And while we know we must address inequitable healthcare, effectively operationalizing racial justice and health equity can be a challenging effort, especially considering the competing priorities healthcare providers and organizations are facing.

But it can be done, and done well, with the right tools and resources.

One of these important resources was recently shared at the 2023 NW Patient Safety Conference in October by Dr. Karthik Sivashanker, vice president of Equitable Health Systems at the American Medical Association (AMA). During his keynote, he shared an online, no-cost health equity resource, the Advancing Equity through Quality and Safety Peer Network Series.

This online Continuing Medical Education (CME) training series offers healthcare providers concrete guidance on how to integrate health equity into their work. Five key areas of focus explore how to:

• Integrate equity into all harm event reporting

• Equip staff with the knowledge, skills, and tools to create safe spaces

• Collect and use harm event data, segmented by sociodemographic characteristics

• Build a case for urgent action for senior leaders and the board

• Ensure accountability to historically marginalized communities
